Line of Heart

The Line of Heart

The Line of Heart, perhaps, necessitates little introduction. It represents the passions of an individual, those emotions which cannot be explained through rational means but define the soul and intensify the force behind what would otherwise be pure fact. In addition to its more generalized, emotional connotation, it naturally carries with it an indication of the attraction of the sexes from natural causes, and further divination using the Line of Heart will reveal the manner in which these venereal urges manifest themselves.

The Line of Heart also demonstrates its corresponding physical component: the condition of the circulatory system and strength of the heart itself.(128) For a weak Line denotes not only an enervated emotional state, but a weakened or endangered constitution in relation to the bearer's vascular system.

Points of Ascension

NB: There appears to be some ambiguity as to which point is the origin of the Line of Heart and which is the end. Some authors purport that the Line begins at the percussion of the hand, below the Mount of Mercury. Others proclaim it initiates from the opposite side of the hand, just below the Mount of Jupiter. This section will take the stance of the latter, drawing upon the following premises: An excellent rule to adhere to when defining the emotional characteristics of an individual is to note the position of the Line on the hand, and how much area is bound between the base of the fingers and the Line of Heart. Should the Line be high upon the hand, the individual is more selfish in his desires and means to satisfy them. Conversely, the lower the Line be upon the hand, the more "room" one has for their heart; he will exhibit a warm and giving personality.(130)

The general sweep of the Line is also crucial to determining the emotional type of the bearer. A Line that rises upward marks an individual who gratifies his love though the more simplistic, baser means, namely that of venereal congress. An individual with a level Line, or one that slopes downward, has a considerably more complex romantic state, one that is not so readily appeased through more typical romantic conventions; such a person shall be appeased by poetry, by clothing, perhaps by a smell or unexpected association. He is not a sensualist, and as such, he is not easily aroused, nor is he aroused via physical contact or possibly even verbal suggestion. He instead lives in a layer of abstracted romanticism and affection; it is up to those who love him to unravel these layers of complexity to reach his kernel.(131)

Points of Termination

The termination of the Line of Heart usually occurs somewhere between the Mount of Jupiter and the Mount of Saturn, which represent a spectrum the extreme idealism of love versus its component of physical gratification, respectively. As with many traits of the palm, a balance between the two is desirable.

Markings

  • Should the Line terminate in a trident, it presages a felicitous life, with concordant and loving marital relations as well as pecuniary success.(135)
  • An island within the Line of Heart often symbolizes a guilty intrigue: cuckoldry, an illicit union, or a secretive and unnatural relationship.(258)
  • Lines that cross the Line of Heart symbolize momentary setbacks--they may either be emotional traumas fostered by a great disappointment in expectations or a lost love; or they may represent actual physical maladies of the vascular system the bearer may suffer.
  • A Line that is fretted with frequent cross-lines reveals an inconstant lover, one who has experienced a series of amourettes, none of which carried any significance.
