Line of Heart
The Line of Heart
The Line of Heart, perhaps, necessitates little introduction. It represents the passions of an individual, those emotions which cannot be explained through rational means but define the soul and intensify the force behind what would otherwise be pure fact. In addition to its more generalized, emotional connotation, it naturally carries with it an indication of the attraction of the sexes from natural causes, and further divination using the Line of Heart will reveal the manner in which these venereal urges manifest themselves.
The Line of Heart also demonstrates its corresponding physical component: the condition of the circulatory system and strength of the heart itself.(128) For a weak Line denotes not only an enervated emotional state, but a weakened or endangered constitution in relation to the bearer's vascular system.
The information concerning the Line of Heart is composed of the following sections:
Composition of the Line of Heart
The Line fo Heart should be deep, clear, well-colored, pink, and not too thin or broad.
- A Line that is thin and bare (bare meaning that there are few details, markings, and interactions with other lines), the bearer is cold-hearted and possesses little sympathy towards others. If the line is only thin and weak near the beginning of the line (below the Mount of Mercury), this bodes impotence for the bearer.
- A bright red line announces a great violence of passion.
- A pale, broad line is exhibited in an individual who is indifferent and incapable of deep affection. He remains aloof to emotional attachments.(120)
- A chained line denotes a weakness and vacillation of affection. On occasion, it may reveal a flirtatious individual.(244)
- The deeper and less "frayed" a line is, the more selfish shall the bearer be with their emotions. Likewise, should the line be constantly frayed, he is greatly dependent upon the affections and support of others.(86)
- If the line has a shattered look with many breaks that are not overlapped, the individual is a misogynist or misandrist should they be man or woman, respectively.(252)
- If the line should initiate strongly yet end in a wisp, it betokens an individual who has grown cold to the joys of life--the heart has grown hard due to disappointments in life.
Points of Ascension
NB: There appears to be some ambiguity as to which point is the origin of the Line of Heart and which is the end. Some authors purport that the Line begins at the percussion of the hand, below the Mount of Mercury. Others proclaim it initiates from the opposite side of the hand, just below the Mount of Jupiter. This section will take the stance of the latter, drawing upon the following premises:
- The Lines of Life and Head both originate from beneat the Mount of Jupiter; it would be inconsistent to posit the origin of the Line of Heart is from the opposite side, the percussion.
- Some practices of palmistry, particularly Indian methodology, uses the Line of Heart as a gauge for the lifespan of an individual, as the longer the Line, the longer the lifespan. A line reaching all the way to the percussion is the sign of an individual who shall live 100 years, a line reaching the Mount of the Sun shall live 75, et cetera. With this in mind, it is peculiar to judge a line's beginning from where it actually ends under another analysis.
- The Line of Heart nearly always exists below Jupiter, yet its behavior further along the hand is inconsistent. This would correspond with the life of an individual, whose emotions at birth are quite undifferentiated from that of other newborns, but grow more varied, unique, and complex as their life progresses.
An excellent rule to adhere to when defining the emotional characteristics of an individual is to note the position of the Line on the hand, and how much area is bound between the base of the fingers and the Line of Heart. Should the Line be high upon the hand, the individual is more selfish in his desires and means to satisfy them. Conversely, the lower the Line be upon the hand, the more "room" one has for their heart; he will exhibit a warm and giving personality.(130)
The general sweep of the Line is also crucial to determining the emotional type of the bearer. A Line that rises upward marks an individual who gratifies his love though the more simplistic, baser means, namely that of venereal congress. An individual with a level Line, or one that slopes downward, has a considerably more complex romantic state, one that is not so readily appeased through more typical romantic conventions; such a person shall be appeased by poetry, by clothing, perhaps by a smell or unexpected association. He is not a sensualist, and as such, he is not easily aroused, nor is he aroused via physical contact or possibly even verbal suggestion. He instead lives in a layer of abstracted romanticism and affection; it is up to those who love him to unravel these layers of complexity to reach his kernel.(131)
- A Line that begins at the Line of Head shall denote an individual whose emotions are reigned by logic and rationality.(87)
- A line rising from the Mount of Upper Mars betokens a lover with a secretive disposition.(90)
- Should the Line rise from the Mount of Luna, a jealous personality shall be revealed. For since the individual's emotions are birthed from the very font of imagination, even the smallest of trifles shall be magnified into tragic ordeals for all participants.(90)
- A line rising from the Mount of Mercury betrays an individual whose love is influenced by the size of one's estate: they will frequently marry for financial reasons.(90)
- A Line rising from the Mount of the Sun reveals an individual rapt with aesthetics and art. Such a person will give themselves wholly to the ideals of love for the sake of Art and Beauty.(90)
- A Line that begins with many short, fine lines that merge into one cohesive line, the bearer shall be quite fertile.(157)
Points of Termination
The termination of the Line of Heart usually occurs somewhere between the Mount of Jupiter and the Mount of Saturn, which represent a spectrum the extreme idealism of love versus its component of physical gratification, respectively. As with many traits of the palm, a balance between the two is desirable.
- Should the Line terminate at the Mount of Jupiter, the individual swells with proud notions of idealistic love, noble affections, and is ambitious in the pursuit of what a not only what a mate should be, but what a friend should be as well. Such an individual would not marry beneath his station, for it would be an affront, an ignoble compromise in the lofty realm of love.(133) These idealistic tendencies worsen and contort into jealousy as the line continues to rise: the higher the line, the more covetous the bearer becomes.
- Should the Line be deeply cut and cross the entire length of the hand, neither rising nor falling, the bearer posseses an excess of affection and a terrible tendency for fierce jealousy.(24)
- Should the Line cut its way into the finger itself, all of the extreme qualities of the above shall be amplified. The bearer will be able to see no faults or failings in the object of his affections, and should their beloved ever fall from their pedestal before the eyes of their devotee, the bearer shall experience profound shock from the disillusionment incurred. In reference to this, Cheiro laments:
Poor worshipper! When wilt thou see that, though women be pure, they be not perfect; they are but human, and being human they are more fitting than if they were divine. Why, then, place them so high that they are more likely to fall? Their place is by thy side, the companion of thy humanity, the sister part of all thy faults.(99)
One final note to the bearers of such a line: unless there are marks to the contrary, such as a clearly-defined Girdle of Venus, the individual will possess no sensuality. Their love will be completely absorbed in the intellect, in the phenomenon of love. Acts of love, apart from their declarations, will not be effected physically.(247)
- If the line terminate between the first and second fingers, and consequently between the Mounts of Jupiter and Saturn, the bearer draws from the practicality and calmness of the Mount of Saturn in matters of love. Sucn an individual is warm, vital, and comports himself with a generous disposition.(133) He shall retain the ideals of love and affection, but will possess the level-headedness to recognize and live with the flaws of his companions. He will also draw upon some of the sensuality of Saturn; his professions of passion shall exhibit themselves both physically and mentally. But these acts will be less flamboyant and overt, for the Line is now supported less by Jupiter's self-proclamation and more of Saturn's sensibility and solemnity.(85)(91)
- Should the line terminate at the Mount of Saturn, the bearer will exhibit a great deal of passion, but selfishly so. This corresponds well with the opening notes in Points of Ascension, as there is now less area between the Line of Heart and the base of the fingers. This individual will indulge in excess sensuality, the extent of which is evinced by how high the Line of Heart rises before it terminates as well as the Line's overall height on the hand. He will possess very physical needs, and will exhibit a great deal of preoccupation with the opposite sex.(131) With such an individual, love is more passionate than wise.(85)
- Should the Line rise to the Mount of Saturn and be chained throughout, it reveals the bearer to be one who has utter disdain and contempt for the opposite sex.
- Should the line terminate without rising, that is, to end somewhere below either mount, and should the line be straight and uneventful, it betokens a cautious personality in matters of the heart. Such a person, like the line, is level-headed, and is rarely seized by the passion of the moment.(133)
- For a the Line of Heart to end early beneath the Mount of Apollo is a sign of "stunted affections" who shall inadequately express their sentiments, assuming such sentiments even exist.
Offshoots
A Line of Heart with no offshoots is often the sign of a loveless life with respect to the opposite sex(95), though the opposite can be equally as bleak: a Line with myriad offshoots shall represent a life filled with multiplicitous but pointless interludes that may end painfully and awkwardly. Once again, a balance is to be sought between these two poles.
- A line drooping from the Line of Heart portends a deep emotional trauma such as the loss of one's parents or even psychological abuse rooted in childhood. But as this is the Line of Heart, it may be very likely that this line is a symbol of a deep and traumatic love affair.(134) The same divination should be made if it is not an offshoot but the line itself that droops towards the Lines of Head or Life.
- Lines rising from the Line of Heart mark periods of warmth and vigor in the bearer's life; though these lines often signify romantic interests, they may merely be indicators of moments of impassioned interest. The mount to which it rises will further clarify the nature of their involvement.
- A line that forks towards the Mount of Jupiteris a sign of true, unfailing love. If the other side of the fork lay between the fingers of Jupiter and Saturn, a happy and tranquil nature are evident. Should the fork terminate on Saturn, however, the bearer is marked as an uncertain lover, fickle in their affections and erratic in their expression thereof.
- Should the Line of Heart not fork, it harbingers a failure in monetary matters, and may mark the bearer as childless.(134)
- Breaks in the line of heart often portend a great emotional trauma dealt to the bearer, typically fostered by a romantic upset. On occasion, these lines do portend physical heart difficulties. In such cases. the event will be correspondingly marked upon the Line of Life or the Line of Health.(135)
- A Line that breaks under the Mount of the Sun reveals a love affair that was severed due to the caprice of the bearer.(253)
- Should it break underneath the Mount of Saturn, the affair was dashed due to fate: neither party was responsible. It was an occurrence precipitated from outside either participant's sphere of influence.(253)
- If broken under the Mount of Mercury, the affair was terminated owing to avarice and affections overriden by an inflated absorption with money.(253)
- Further details may be gleaned for the cause of the relationship by the drooping (or rising) of the lines, as many breaks involve such lines. The reader should take note of the direction of both ends of the break when determining the cause.(88)
- Should the break overlap, the lovers shall be reunited.(253)
Markings
Should the Line terminate in a trident, it presages a felicitous life, with concordant and loving marital relations as well as pecuniary success.(135)
An island within the Line of Heart often symbolizes a guilty intrigue: cuckoldry, an illicit union, or a secretive and unnatural relationship.(258)
Lines that cross the Line of Heart symbolize momentary setbacks--they may either be emotional traumas fostered by a great disappointment in expectations or a lost love; or they may represent actual physical maladies of the vascular system the bearer may suffer.
A Line that is fretted with frequent cross-lines reveals an inconstant lover, one who has experienced a series of amourettes, none of which carried any significance.
Miscellaneous Attributes
- The position of the Line of Heart is an effective determinant for the amount of emotional involvement the bearer shall exhibit.
- A line high up on the hand reveals an individual with fierce passions and the potential for great jealousy.(42)
- A Line that is lower on the hand but still maintains a comfortable distance between itself and the Line of Head will respresent a cold and unfeeling individual.(42)
- If the Line be low and close to the Line of Head, emotions shall interfere with what should otherwise be rational decisions.(42)
- If there be no Line of Heart whatsoever, the bearer cannot feel deep affection. They may, however, be very sensual, as physical gratification is a more primal sitmulus-response phenomenon than strongly-felt emotion. This is doubly likely if the individual possesses a soft hand, which often betokens an indulgent personality driven by physical sensation.(120)
- Perhaps there is a Line of Heart, but it has merged with the Line of Head in what is termed the Simian Line. This is described in detail in the Miscellaneous Attributes section of the Line of Head. One might ask, when is the Line of Heart present, and when is it part of a Simian Line? Most of the time, it will be the latter. However, if the Line of Head does not span the entirety of the Hand, or if it droops such that it does not terminate above the Mount of Upper Mars, it may indeed be that the unfortunate individual possesses no Line of Heart.
- Should the Line merge with the Line of Head, it denotes a serious disappointment or loss that has caused dramatic changes in bearer's lifestyle. This also denotes a period in the individual's life where the mind shall prevail over the emotions when deciding matters.(87)
- Should the Line droop even more precipitously such that it cut the Line of Head, it portends a disruption of mental faculties at the date of conflict. If the Line of Head terminates at the junction, the individual shall never recover.(87-8)
