Trails and Camps in The Mt. Hood National Forest

BONNEY CROSSING CAMPGROUND
Barlow Ranger District, 541-467-2291.
Directions: Take Highway 35 towards Hood River, turn right on Road 48, turn left just past Rock Creek Campground on Road #4810, then right on Road #4811, next right on Road #2710. This is a small 8 unit campground on Badger Creek near Badger Creek Wilderness.
Facilities: Camp has toilets, unloading ramp, tables with fireplaces and 6 horse tie manger and one horse corral.

CLACKAMAS LAKE CAMPGROUND Bear Springs Ranger District, 541-328-6211.
Directions: Off Hwy 26 from Madras, or if coming from Portland take Skyline Road (F.S. Road 42) towards Timothy Lakes, approximately 9 miles beyond the Clackamas Historic Ranger Station. Turn left on F.S. Road 4270.
Facilities: The first 19 units are for horses. Facilities include fire rings with grates, tables hitching rail, double-vault toilet, and piped water. There are many trails in the area. Fee $4.00.

DEVILS HALF ACRE
Bear Springs Ranger District, 541-328-6211.
This is not a designated horse camp but is used by many horse people including large groups.
Directions: From Portland take State Hwy 26 to junction of State Hwy 35. A short distance (3 miles or so) the Pacific Crest Trail crosses State Hwy 35. Turn right, then left on Barlow Road, one mile to a large meadow which is where most people camp, but some do use campground, tethering their horses out of the camp area.
Facilities: One toilet, 2 picnic tables and fire rings, water from creek. Trail Conditions: Barlow Road is graveled (not to everyone's liking) Many trails including Pacific Crest and Barlow Road. Parking at top of Barlow also. Map

GIBSON PRAIRIE HORSE CAMP
Hood River Ranger District, 541-666-0701.
Directions: From Portland take State Hwy 26 to State Hwy 35 towards Hood River, turn right on FS Road #44, turn left on FS Road #17. Camp is on right side of road.
Facilities: Vault toilets, unloading ramp, 5 tables with fire places and riding on Surveyors Ridge Trail. Map

HERMAN CREEK HORSE CAMP
Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, 541-386-2333.
Directions: From Portland take I-84 to Cascade Locks exit, go through town, turn left at"Airport" sign, cross freeway, turn left. It is on your right.
Facilities: 7 sites, fire rings, 2 double vaulted toilets, water. Hitching rails but no corrals. Herman Creek Trail and Pacific Crest Trail south accessible from camp. Can trailer across Bridge Of The Gods and ride Pacific Crest Trail north. Parking at left end of bridge. Camping fee. Map

JOE GRAHAM HORSE CAMP

Directions: Off Highway 26 from Madras or from the Portland area, take Skyline Road (FS Road 42) towards timothy Lake , approximately 8.4 miles to the camp on the left. sign is on the right side of the road.
Facilities: 14 campsites (several large enough for two families); fire rings with grates, tables, hitching rails, pole stalls. double-vault toilet, and piped water. there is an unloading ramp on Skyline Road close to camp entrance. Many trails in and around timothy Lake and the Pacific Crest Trail passes close to camp and goes south through Warm Springs Reservation, and north to Timothy Lakes. Camping fee is $5.00. Map

KNEBEL SPRINGS
Directions: Take Hwy 35 toward Hood river, turn right on Road 44, turn left on 17 and then right on 1720. (See Mt Hood Forest Map).
Facilities: Small camp. One 6 horse tie manger and two 4 horse corrals, picnic tables, fire rings, spring water. Map

RILEY HORSE CAMP
Directions: Off Hwy 26 at Zig Zag; turn northeast onto Lolo Pass Road and proceed approximately 4 miles to turnoff for McNeil and Riley Campgrounds.
Facilities: 14 campsites with tables, fire rings 2 double vault toilets, tie stalls, water at creek and pump. Many scenic trails and Pacific Crest Trail. Map
