Kelly Point Duathlon Race Report: 4/14/2002

Well, not a whole lot to report. Tiger won his third green jacket….woa, sorry 'bout that. That would be the second half of my day. Fairly good race: 7th Overall, 3rd AG. Really just a short, steady race.

Run course: each 5k, two laps of the park
Bike course: kind of a weird combo of out-n-backs and a culdisack (sp? I know that's not right)

Woke up to really clear, blue skies after days of rain. VERY nice change. Only problem was that resulted from a cool front blowing through - cleared the skies but brought in some fairly steady high winds and cool temps. I didn't notice the temps until after the race when I stood talking to some fellas and started freaking shivering as GG fed me Wheaties Energy Somethin-or-other (not too bad, not great, but not too bad).

First Run: My plan was to wear my HRM on the first run to try and control my freaking adrenaline and competitive nature and cruise the first run by holding a strict HR well below my lactate threshold…..didn't happen. The course was so rough that I was afraid if I took my eyes off of wear my next step would hit, I'd turn an ankle - combo of really rough blacktop and chipped rock trails. Dropped the HRM in T1. First 5k: 17:04 (uh, that distance might be short…I ain't that fast.)

Bike: Not much other than some fairly strong winds. There seemed to be some serious roadies at this race with road setups, pursuit bars and disc wheels in back. Dudes up front were getting blown all over the place. Only one problem on the bike. I was passing a guy on the left and was overtaking him pretty well when the jackass comes blowing BETWEEN us. I yelled (because the winds were blowing so hard) for the guy to pass on the left…no reaction. Whatever….idiot. Caught some pretty serious tailwinds and held 28-32mph for a good stretch. Now THAT was cool.

T2: I love Yankz but I learned one thing: do NOT tighten them on your foot before the race without checking to see if they are too tight to get the stupid shoes back on for the second stupid run (I really don't like that second run in the Du's!!). The guy that ended up getting 2nd in my AG passed me in T2 after I had dropped his arse on the second half of the bike. I couldn't get my freaking right foot into my shoe because I had the &#%! Yankz too tight. I lost some precious time in a race this short in T2.

Second Run: I really hate this second run. I'm TOTALLY ready for tri-season to start around here, but I digress….again. So the dude that passed me in T2 was within sight the whole freaking second run. We had to have been going exactly the same pace because we both passed the same number of people but he stayed the same distance 'til the freaking end. Oh well, watcha gonna do. One of the guys at passed on the first lap was one of the roadie-types that BLEW past me on the bike with a disc in the back. I ran up beside him and started to yap a little…he was breathing HARD and didn't seem to appreciate the "lively banter" (Ma G term). Dropped him well before the last lap. We talked a little afterwards. Pretty cool guy. Started the last lap and got a "YEAH, GO JEFF!!" from Gina as she came in on the bike. Second 5k: 17:and change.

What I Learned: Du's still hurt. Don't tighten your freaking Yankz before the race no matter how bad you think your foot is flopping around, or at least take the time to check and see if they are too freaking tight. Ma G can freaking HAMMER on the bike - top female bike split, 1st in AG.
