Sea Kayaking
from the island of
Roatan

I took a week-long guided sea kayak tour while on the island of Roatan.
The tour was based out of a rustic hacienda in the town of Oak Ridge on the eastern half of the island. The town was a locals only town built right on the waterfront with most of the houses and stores sititing on stilts. There was some good kayaking to be had based out of this town. It was a fun week.

Here's some photos............
Here is the deck of our hacienda from the upper deck of the hacienda. It looks out over the next bay over from the main part of town.

The hacienda sits atop a ridge and you have to walk up these stairs to get there. You can only get here by boat. Atop the ridge you are away from most of the neighbors barking dogs and crowing chickens.

One day we went kayaking through the town to get to a place to go snorkeling.

The town along the waterfront is all on stilts and there are very few roads. The harbor is the road.

Cruising along main street Oak Ridge.

Here is a boat going by a store on the waterfront.

Here we are approaching the Pigeon Cayes by a shuttle boat with our kayaks on board.

It was a 3 hour water taxi ride out here to this remote island. The best snorkeling of the trip was here.

To get back out to where we left our boats the previous day we took water taxis.

Here we are going through a mangrove cut that bisects the island.

This is the village where we left our boats at the end of the day.

We hired a local to watch over them over night.

This is the village of Santa Helena. It is a boat in only village on the coastline with no cars at all.

There is a trail to the other side of the island with another vilage.

The housekeeper at the hacienda had a water taxi business and he brought us to a few places in his boat.

They are narrow and tippy so you have top be careful when you move around in them.

Everybody gets around town in motorboats so they need a gas station.

This is a gas station where they sell gasoline in plastic jugs to you.

Here is a taxi boat full of students going home from school.
