It has been my honor to serve community park districts for almost 25 years. My experience in building parks and developing recreation programs within budget will continue to be valuable to Bend.

As a national Gold Medal Finalist, the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District is acknowledged to be one of the top four programs in the United States. I pledge to help the District to continue its tradition of excellence.

Principles in action:

The following principles, developed from my twenty plus years of park board experience, have guided my decisions to provide the buffer between inevitable development and the quality of life we have come to expect through careful planning and high quality programs. We have stayed within budget and have used our existing resources wisely.

When I last campaigned I pledged four things:

  1. "Parkland and open space should be acquired as it becomes available"
    - We have acquired almost 200 acres of new parkland.

  2. "We must continue to develop neighborhood parks"
    - Eleven neighborhood parks have been completed or are under development with four others scheduled for next year. Two dog parks are under development.

  3. "New athletic fields must be developed to meet the recreation needs of our growing community"
    - Three fields have been completed, and standards for field development, allocation and use have been approved by the Board.

  4. "The District needs to continue to aggressively partner with the private sector, the School District, the City, the County, service clubs and others who contribute to our community's quality of life"
-The District now partners with more than 30 organizations. Everyone has a stake in Parks and Recreation.

We have identified the resources to support renovation of the Juniper Swim and Fitness Center. This has all been accomplished without any additional taxes.

New Challenges for Bend and the Park District:

Partner for new Facilities
  • In the last year the Board has been approached by groups willing to partner in the development of an ice rink, a whitewater river trail, an equestrian center, and a skateboard park. With careful planning and their assistance these resources can be developed. Use the Park District's middle school basketball program as the model
Partner for Youth Sports
  • Because the School District plans to drop middle school sports, we must develop a strategy to support middle school sports programs through District partnership with the Bend-La Pine Schools. Use the Park District's middle school basketball partnership with the School District as the model.
Partner for Trail Development
  • Lead the development of the Urban Trails Plan by encouraging the City, Urban Renewal District, property owners and other groups to partner for trails.  Completion of the Deschutes River Trail is tantalizingly close.
